The International Maritime Organization chose the slogan “MARPOL at 50 – Our commitment goes on” to celebrate World Maritime Day and from Prodevelop and MPB we could not do anything but join the commitment of IMO.
This motto is loaded with meaning, and is that, since 1973 the protection of the seas has been part of the agenda of the organization, but, in addition, it has never been treated as a static issue, but has been reviewed and amended to adjust to the realities of each moment.
Not surprisingly, the standard has 6 annexes that have helped raise awareness and enhance the health of our seas and oceans. And we have seen how in recent years this approach has only strengthened with the link to the 2030 Agenda and several of the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically the following:
- SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy.
- SDG 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure.
- SDG 13: Climate action.
- SDG 14: Life below water.
- SDG 17: Partnerships to achieve the SDGs.
In our specific case, for many years we have had a MARPOL module within Posidonia PCS with a preconfigured flow of states, which we adapt to the peculiarities and needs of each Port Authority in question.
Being an integrated module within the PCS solution, it facilitates and speeds up the rest of the tasks related to waste management since it puts the different parties in contact: shipping companies, suppliers and consignees through a single tool.
But not only that, it also has the ability to digitally sign documents and receipts and has the possibility of activating notifications via email to interested parties.
In conclusion, we want to take advantage of this day to claim the care of the seas and oceans, while giving visibility to all the actions that many companies in the sector carry out to protect the environment.
Happy World Maritime Day!
