PostGIS

PostGIS is a flagship in the field of free software data bases. It is the module for PostgreSQL developed principally by Refractions Research Inc. This module gives PostgreSQL the capacity not only to store geospatial information and to observe the SFSS norm, but also to carry out geographical analysis operations.

• PostGIS is a very widespread product, with important references at a worldwide level. There is a wide range of all types of tools with access to PostGIS. It is a very active project which is in continuous evolution.

MySQL

MySQL is unquestionably the most successful data base used for Web applications, but this data base has two serious problems:

• It cannot be considered completely FOSS. It is not a totally  free product as it is offered with a dual license by the company that is heading the project, MySQL AB.
• It doesn’t observe the SFSS and is therefore situated (for the moment) as a mere “container” for geographical information.
